James Charles Currency Manipulation

From shootinggallerysf.com“As of last year, artist James Charles has been engrossed in an interesting new project; small in
scale…but large in depth. He began drawing on dollar bills, for the sake of his own amusement;
crudely altering the presidents’ faces to become monsters, celebrities, etc. After accidentally
spending a few of his early pieces, James decided to stop carrying them in his wallet, and
started putting them inside of a magazine for safe-keeping. The magazine folder eventually
became a large scrapbook, showcasing bills of all denominations. He found ink and materials to
match perfectly what the U.S. Mint uses on the bank notes, and began to experiment with ways
to alter the font and script along the bottom of the bills. It became the perfect way for James to
inject an additional layer of wit.
Altering currency in this way also poses questions regarding the true value of paper bills,
something made with seemingly insignificant materials – that somehow fuels our country’s evershifting
economy, and ultimately impacts living conditions around the globe. James has put a
wrench in the recirculation process by claiming his role as an artist, and declaring these specific
bills are not currency, but art objects.”

Higher Primate Joey Diaz Tee

From higher-primate “Joey Diaz is a true American original. He’s been my friend for over a decade, and I can say with 100% certainty that he’s the funniest human being I’ve ever met. He’s also my favorite person in the world to sacrifice the sacred plant to the fire gods with. Joey is a frequent guest on my podcast, and out of all the outrageous and hilarious things he’s ever said, this one quote stands out above the rest. He said it with such passion and sincerity that we knew instantly it needed its own T shirt. Here is that shirt.” – Joe Rogan

Sam Spratt

Tron Legacy and Super Troopers mash up in my latest piece for Gizmodo and Internet Superhero, Dave Pell on Internet Police. http://gizmo.do/fetzrA -Sam Spratt

“Dwight Schrute: Bears, Beets, & Battlestar Galactica” So for awhile now, I’ve been dying to paint fur. I didn’t have it in me to just paint an animal or do something fashion-like. The next logical step? One of comedy’s best: Rainn Wilson aka The Office’s Dwight Schrute wearing a bear (with just the tiniest hint of beets and battlestar). I experimented with softer, hazier brushwork with this one. Obviously that was very helpful with the fur but it gave the skin a surprising texture which I kinda dig. If you like this painting, do follow me on tumblr (I follow back almost every person that follows me for the sake of not missing out on potential inspiration), or for the latest, I run a mean facebook artist’s page and a musing-filled twitter.

Portrait painting of Rockstar Games legendary Sam Houser for Kotaku http://bit.ly/dWQJ7A This was a really enjoyable portrait for me because the reference photo available to me was just so damn shitty (no detail, low res, contrast totally blown out, etc. see here: http://s12.acephotos.org/images/130x130/3/2/3256oehtlybkb2to.jpg) and rather than rely solely on the photo for being able to replicate the likeness, I was forced to essentially paint in color, light, and detail to flesh out Houser in a completely new way. Just because you are using a very specific image as a reference point, doesn’t mean you need to adhere to the rules of the image. Also, going into the painting mentally limiting my color palette to Kotaku’s site colors and throwing in neutral values made for a fun challenge to use nuclear waste greens without looking like vomit. Not to mention… the guy looks like a total badass.

“Katy Perry: Extra-Terrestrial” -Portrait Painting by Sam Spratt Long requested, I was never sure how to really paint Katy Perry in a way that wasn’t in the form of a classic but generic pinup. With her latest song, E.T. with Kanye, I finally had an out. Not only could I give the often cheery popstar a darker almost “Gaga” appearance, but It gave me the opportunity to explore a more alien color palette and surreal elements from my imagination.  If you like this painting, do follow me on tumblr (I follow back almost every person that follows me for the sake of not missing out on potential inspiration), or for the latest, I run a mean facebook artist’s page and a musing-filled twitter.

Portrait Painting of Rihanna. From my pre-tumblr backlog.  If you like this painting, do follow me on tumblr (I follow back almost every person that follows me for the sake of not missing out on potential inspiration), or for the latest, I run a mean facebook artist’s page and a musing-filled twitter.

Ground Release / Denmark

From Ground Release ” On Monday the 2nd of May 2011, 7 international artists headed to Koge in Denmark to collaborate on our European foundation project hosted by Ground Release. Talents hailed from the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany and the United States. We are proud to present and integrate one of the most dynamic groups worldwide and expose their joint work to the globe, all the artist had a chance to plan and process all stages of the work that was produced. The artists were presented with a substantial wall space of 300m2 painted black, they soon started planning and applying the base of their background with high-pressure industrial sprayers and selective roller paint colours. Equipped with diesel powered scissor lifts they were able to coat the whole wall before painting on top. Three days later some next level work was produced by the whole team!! ”

Tristan Perich 1-Bit Symphony

From 1bitsymphonyTristan Perich’s 1-Bit Symphony is an electronic composition in five movements on a single microchip. Though housed in a CD jewel case like his first circuit album (1-Bit Music 2004-05), 1-Bit Symphony is not a recording in the traditional sense; it literally “performs” its music live when turned on. A complete electronic circuit—programmed by the artist and assembled by hand—plays the music through a headphone jack mounted into the case itself. The album is available from Cantaloupe Music. ”
