Harlem Globetrotters: Team That Changed The World

From ” If anyone doubts that the Harlem Globetrotters were incomparable athletes as well as world-class entertainers, this documentary will put them wise. The documentary features interviews with everyone from former Globetrotters and NBA coaches to Henry Kissinger. “The Team That Changed The World” lays out not only the development of the team itself – how original Globetrotters Marques Haynes and Reece “Goose” Tatum turned a sport into a form of vaudeville without sacrificing amazing displays of skill – but also the volatile racial politics of the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s, when the Globetrotters were at their peak. In only an hour, the documentary argues persuasively that this basketball team, as they toured the world, became a symbol of racial progress and American good will. It’s not the same as seeing the Globetrotters live, but fans of these great performers will find this documentary a pleasure.

Arrested for dancing at Jefferson Memorial

REALLY WTF !

Stupid laws enforced by stupid people, I guess that’s America.

From “A flashmob in Washington has felt the full force of the law, by being forcibly arrested by police – for dancing in public. They’d gathered at the Jefferson Memorial in defiance of a ban on dancing at the monument. Among those held were RT America presenter Adam Kokesh, who says he was slammed to the ground by officers. The ban came in during 2008 when an activist sued police for arresting her for public dancing. The group say they were paying tribute to her as a champion of the First Amendment, guaranteeing freedom, and in response to US District Judge John D. Bates’ ruling that denounced dancing on the site.”

Tron Legacy and Super Troopers mash up in my latest piece for Gizmodo and Internet Superhero, Dave Pell on Internet Police. http://gizmo.do/fetzrA -Sam Spratt

“Dwight Schrute: Bears, Beets, & Battlestar Galactica” So for awhile now, I’ve been dying to paint fur. I didn’t have it in me to just paint an animal or do something fashion-like. The next logical step? One of comedy’s best: Rainn Wilson aka The Office’s Dwight Schrute wearing a bear (with just the tiniest hint of beets and battlestar). I experimented with softer, hazier brushwork with this one. Obviously that was very helpful with the fur but it gave the skin a surprising texture which I kinda dig. If you like this painting, do follow me on tumblr (I follow back almost every person that follows me for the sake of not missing out on potential inspiration), or for the latest, I run a mean facebook artist’s page and a musing-filled twitter.

Portrait painting of Rockstar Games legendary Sam Houser for Kotaku http://bit.ly/dWQJ7A This was a really enjoyable portrait for me because the reference photo available to me was just so damn shitty (no detail, low res, contrast totally blown out, etc. see here: http://s12.acephotos.org/images/130x130/3/2/3256oehtlybkb2to.jpg) and rather than rely solely on the photo for being able to replicate the likeness, I was forced to essentially paint in color, light, and detail to flesh out Houser in a completely new way. Just because you are using a very specific image as a reference point, doesn’t mean you need to adhere to the rules of the image. Also, going into the painting mentally limiting my color palette to Kotaku’s site colors and throwing in neutral values made for a fun challenge to use nuclear waste greens without looking like vomit. Not to mention… the guy looks like a total badass.

“Katy Perry: Extra-Terrestrial” -Portrait Painting by Sam Spratt Long requested, I was never sure how to really paint Katy Perry in a way that wasn’t in the form of a classic but generic pinup. With her latest song, E.T. with Kanye, I finally had an out. Not only could I give the often cheery popstar a darker almost “Gaga” appearance, but It gave me the opportunity to explore a more alien color palette and surreal elements from my imagination.  If you like this painting, do follow me on tumblr (I follow back almost every person that follows me for the sake of not missing out on potential inspiration), or for the latest, I run a mean facebook artist’s page and a musing-filled twitter.

Portrait Painting of Rihanna. From my pre-tumblr backlog.  If you like this painting, do follow me on tumblr (I follow back almost every person that follows me for the sake of not missing out on potential inspiration), or for the latest, I run a mean facebook artist’s page and a musing-filled twitter.
