Metroid:  Other M Review

When Nintendo announced that its beloved Metroid franchise was coming to the GameCube, that it would be made by rookie developers Retro Studios, and that it would take a radical perspective shift from traditional side-scroller to first-person adventure, gamers had every right to be skeptical.  Metroid is the cult favorite of the Nintendo family and adored by both its fans and critics, all of who had very high expectations.  Remarkably, Retro not only met those expectations but far surpassed them and delivered a trilogy of games that sit among the crowing achievements of the GameCube and Wii.  But now Nintendo has handed development over to accomplished developers Team Ninja (of Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden fame) for its newest installment, Other M.  Team Ninja now not only faces the challenges Retro faced, but have to live up to the high-bar expectations set by Retro.  Team Ninja has taken a few liberties of their own with the series that make a solid attempt to reach for that bar, but ultimately fall well short.
